19-Year 1/2-3Bears-Gahna-ASAP

Location: Gahna

Salary: International Package

Job type: Year 1/2 Teachers

Start date: ASAP

A lovely private British International School in Ghana, Africa is looking for two new teachers: A reception teacher and a Year 1/2 teacher. This is to start in the new academic year: NQT’s are welcome.  This could be a great post for two friends looking for great teaching jobs in Africa.

Established in 1997, this International School has attained an extremely good reputation in Accra as a school that implements the British Curriculum throughout. SATS are taken at the end of Year Two and our students have always attained excellent results.

The classroom is a combined class of Year One and Two children and the class room has a maximum of 30 children in total for the two classes. The school is well supplied and furnished and the classrooms are air conditioned throughout.

The students are from a variety of backgrounds but all are from families in the middle to high income bracket. Due to the vast variety of nationalities in the school the children join at various different levels of learning. Some even join not speaking English at all! Due to the small stature of the school, thee school is able to provide more attention to each child’s needs and hence the school has always been highly recommended for parents who are new to Ghana. Approximately 90% of the students are from short term expatriate families who usually stay two to three years before moving on to another country.

The school has five classes in total: Nursery I and Nursery II, Reception, Year One and Year Two. The school is located in the Airport Residential Area of Accra. It is within five minutes from the only airport in Accra.

Ghana is regarded as one of the most stable and peaceful countries not only in West Africa but Africa as a whole. The country and the capital (Accra) in particular are developing at a rapid rate. Hotels and restaurants, bars and social clubs are many and ranging in standard. There are various high standard shopping malls mostly consisting of South African chain stores such as Shoprite, Game and Woolworths. Ghana does however still suffer from frequent power cuts and inconsistent water supplies. The average pay for a worker in Ghana is less than $150 a month.

The School contract offers a monthly (12 months paid in a year therefore holidays paid for) salary of US $1, 850. The working hours are Monday to Friday 7am to 3.30pm. Fully furnished and fitted accommodation is provided and paid for by the school and this is within ten minutes’ drive of the school itself. The school provides emergency medical assistance in the form of WARA which are German/South African trained paramedics and ambulance service. WARA also has a clinic for less serious illnesses etc. Air ticket from London-Accra-London is issued for the Key Stage One teacher bringing him/her out from London and returning them at the end of the school year. Teachers on two year contracts are issued one ticket each year. Cheap flights are now easily available in Ghana from the likes of Virgin, Air Maroc, KLM and others for teachers wishing to spend their school holiday time back home.
